Giant Step is pleased to offer our DJs a download of Grace Kelly’s album, Trying To Figure It Out. The 23-year-old singer & saxophone player should be familiar to your speakers & television sets. Last December, Jon Batiste snagged Grace as a regular on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s band, Stay Human. She also appears on the Emmy-nominated Amazon Prime series Bosch where she performs “Blues For Harry Bosch,” a track on this album which also gets the remix treatment from popular spin-master, producer and Jazz/Electronica musician Mocean Worker.

Although steeped in Jazz, Trying To Figure It Out marks an adventure in sound exploring the world of Jazz & Beyond that takes the listener on a thought provoking and engaging musical journey. Starting from acoustic jazz and cinematic compositions driven by mood and sound effects, the album then moves to a genre-bending sound with contemporary production, groove, and songwriting – always mixed with improvisation.

Among the many artists and players guesting on the new album are Snarky Puppy’s Michael League (“He Shot A Man,” “Magic”) and Jon Batiste on “Lemons Make Lemonade,” which he recorded in one take in his dressing room following a taping of Colbert.

“Somewhere Over The Rainbow” is featured in Sound Of Redemption, the bio pic about the late great alto saxophonist Frank Morgan. He spent three decades in and out of California’s San Quentin Prison and was a mentor to Grace during the last few years of his life. In 2012, Grace performed at a Frank Morgan tribute concert at San Quentin as part of an all-star band. The experience inspired another track on the album, “He Shot A Man,” which Grace wrote after conversations with various inmates at San Quentin.

We received great responses on the self-titled album from St Germain (Ludovic Navarre), which dropped in October on Nonesuch Records, 15 years after the commercially and critically successful Tourist. On March 11, Navarre digitally releases a new set of four remixes of tracks from the current album, including a remix of “Real Blues” by DJ Deep & Romain Poncet, and three versions of “Sittin Here,” by Atjazz, Boddhi Satva and Terry Laird.

Giant Step is thrilled to offer a download of A Band Called Flash’s EP, Mother Confessor. A project from artist, writer, and producer Jared Hines in collaboration with executive producers Ron Trent and Jonesy, the EP offers five dance floor-grabbing tracks inspired by the Jazz Funk elements of UK outfit Atomsfear and the alternative Disco sounds of Dinosaur L.

Dropping digitally on Friday, the vinyl edition has been a hit at record stores across the globe, selling out its first pressing in two days (it is now on its third). It was selected as #1 on London’s Love Vinyl weekly chart, topped the Disco Chart at Amsterdam’s Rush Hour for three weeks, and noted as a 2015 Best House 12 inch by Japan’s Disk Union.

Emerging from the suburban town of Maplewood, NJ, Jared Hines is a true singer/songwriter/musician. Having an avid record collector and DJ for a father, Jared was surrounded by a consistent mix of eclectic and obscure music from every genre imaginable.

At 14, he received his first bass guitar from a friend. Solely concentrating on the bass, he started making music, practicing little riffs and chords, staying up until dawn until he mastered the instrument. From there, Jared quickly acquired the skill for playing the guitar, drums, and keyboards.

Now, Jared is about to set the dance music world off its heels. Combining early 80s Electro Funk and the Synth-Pop/Punk sounds of the era with his own music sensibilities, he is creating some of the most refreshingly eclectic, modern electronic dance music.

A solo album, IGLC (Intergalactic Love Cloud), is also in the works under Jared Hines for an early 2016 release.

DJ PROMO: Bobby Caldwell & Jack Splash – Cool Uncle

November 16th, 2015

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Stream tracks above (skip with arrows)

Bobby Caldwell might quite possibly be one of R&B’s best-kept secrets… a true soul gem. Known around the world for his 1978 international classic “What You Won’t Do For Love”, most of the rest of his wildly diverse & impressive catalog was just waiting to be discovered….that is until J Dilla intervened. Right at the turn of the millennium, with one genius move, Dilla re-introduced an entire generation to the brilliance that is Bobby Caldwell. In what might possibly be the best hip hop ‘love song’ of all time (“The Light”), Common raps the verses with grace & virtuosity, but it’s Bobby Caldwell on the hook that brought everything together. Dilla did that.

DOWNLOAD | MORE INFO | FEEDBACK & REQUESTS

About 10 years later, the 9 time Grammy award nominated and 4 time Grammy award winning Jack Splash was following a similar path as Bobby…disregarding trends and making his own special brand of soul music for the music-lovers. Critically acclaimed worldwide as the front man for his 15-piece funk band Plantlife, Jack pulled a 180 and stopped touring entirely. He began writing and producing for Cee-Lo Green, Alicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar, John Legend and several more. In interviews though, instead of talking about himself and his commercial success, Jack was talking about HIS idols. He was talking about Earth Wind & Fire, Sly Stone, Steely Dan, Prince & BOBBY CALDWELL…..It just so happened that Bobby was listening.

Just like both Bobby and Jack’s catalogs, the music they make together as Cool Uncle isn’t that easy to define. It definitely has roots in classic soul, but also includes elements of funk, hip hop, rock and all sorts of electronic subtleties. Bobby and Jack called some of their friends and musical co-conspirators to come join the party. Cee-Lo, Mayer Hawthorne, Eric Biddines, Jessie Ware, JD8 and even the legendary Deniece Williams came through for the pot-luck. The end result is a wild ride steeped in soul and groove, but peppered with exciting and unexpected twists and turns. The types of twists and turns that future Dilla’s might end up sampling.

PROMO TRACKLIST:

Intro
Game Over (feat. Mayer Hawthorne)
Breaking Up (feat. Deniece Williams & Eric Biddines)
Never Knew Love Before
Mercy (feat. Cee-Lo Green)
Destiny
Embrace the Night
My Beloved
Break Away (feat. Jessie Ware)

DJ PROMO: David Morin – Every Colour

August 19th, 2015

Giant Step is excited to introduce you to Vancouver-based artist David Morin. This DJ promo includes his debut album, Every Colour, out September 4th on Bombay Records. Morin’s unique, feel-good fusion of soul, hip-hop and jazz has earned early acclaim from industry heavyweights like Russell Simmons’ All Def Digital. His riffs bring to mind the licks of blues and funk masters. Playful hints of disco and pop add retro flavor to a contemporary aesthetic that’s as accessible as it is seductive. And his voice… melodic; smooth as honey; reminiscent in sound and vibe to the likes of John Legend and D’Angelo. Yet, his lyrics address protest: politics, justice, and inspiring social change.

DOWNLOAD | MORE INFO | FEEDBACK & REQUESTS

The humble soul singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist busks regularly on street corners in his hometown and beyond. The guitar and loop-pedal virtuoso makes a solo performance sound like an entire band with beatboxing and vocal harmonies. Self-taught and passionately committed, Morin’s blessed with the ability to turn strangers into fans. As he travels the world, from the Santa Monica Promenade to SXSW in Austin to Barcelona & London, he pulls in a crowd wowed by his skills. Just watch his Music For The People video series and see for yourself.

Growing up in the rough area of Surrey, Vancouver, Morin found escape in his guitar and the hip-hop youth group he joined. He spent his high school years skipping class to sneak into the music room and take advantage of the KORG keyboard, which was a revelation to him, encouraging an interest in drums, synth, and keyboard sounds that he has continued to develop ever since. His lyrics tell of a life lived with highs and lows within his career and hometown. He sings of real issues we all deal with, be it on a personal or political level.
